How to clean your tile grout using D.I.Y. detergents

Tile grout cleaning is considered as one of the cleaning rituals that requires a lot of hard work. With a bit of elbow grease and using the typical things that you can see from your home like toothpaste, baking soda, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide or acetone can make your tile grout super clean. Below are the ingredients and steps needed for you to create your own DIY detergent to use to whiten your tile grout.

  • For toothpaste (to be used for white colored grouts only):
Apply the toothpaste on joints and it acts for at least an hour (or longer for stubborn stains) then rinse it with cold water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Toothpaste prevents impurities and bacteria deposit with its detergent, abrasive and antimicrobial content.

  • For white vinegar:
Get a bowl and fill it with white vinegar until it's half full and add a tablespoon of dishwashing detergent. Mix them together. Then get a toothbrush and use it to rub the tile grout with the vinegar and dishwashing detergent solution. Let it dry and do not rinse.

Vinegar is a natural acid with antifungal properties. You can use 30 drops of lemon essential oil instead of dishwashing liquid. You may use a spray bottle to store the solution so that spray it directly on the tile grout.

  • For lemon juice:
There are 2 different approaches to using lemon juice.

Get a coarse salt and mix it with the lemon juice until it turns into a paste. Then use a cloth or toothbrush to apply the mixture on the tile grout. Let it settle for 10 minutes then rinse. Rust can be also removed by this mixture.

Boil 250ml of water. Get a lemon and cut it in half. Put the 2 halves of lemon in the boiled water. Let it settle for a few minutes for it to infuse. Then rub the solution on the tile grout. Make sure that the solution will remain hot while you rub it on the tile grout.

  • For chlorine (be careful on this one to avoid skin exposure as much as possible):
Do this in a well ventilated room. Use gloves and goggles (to avoid accidental exposure of yourself). Prepare a mixture of 50% chlorine and 50% water in a container. Then transfer the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the tile grout and leave it a few minutes (for deep cleaning effect, you may leave it overnight). Then rinse the tile grout using a wet toothbrush thoroughly.

  • For baking soda:
To make a thick paste out of this, get a fair amount of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar then mix it. Use a toothbrush to rub the mixture on the tile grout and leave it for 10 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly.

  • For acetone:
First, use gloves on this because of its toxic nature. Pour the acetone on a piece of cloth then rub it on the tile grout. Make sure you dampen the cloth frequently because it is very volatile.

You may use hydrogen peroxide to clean the tile grout further. To do this, use a piece of cotton wool and soak it on the hydrogen peroxide to clean the tile grout.
